Cupping Therapy on Ehlers Danlos Patients
Cupping Therapy Question and Answer Series
Intro
Thank you for joining us for another installment of our Cupping Therapy Q&A Series. Here, we feature clinical questions submitted to us by ACE Massage Cupping Therapy practitioners. Our educators offer some brief insight on the topic so that you can expand your working knowledge on this revolutionary bodywork therapy and its benefits.
Question
Is it okay to work on patients with Ehlers Danlos?
Answer
I know E.D. has many variations, however I have one client with it who responds absolutely fine to bodywork, with or without cups. This question should be considered more to how the individual responds to bodywork in general rather than the question of using cups. My clients respond fine to work, even deep tissue, but I acknowledge the limitations of joints and their respective connective tissue structure.
I suggest evaluating the client specifically for bodywork and then incorporating cup work if allowable. Perhaps research this further through the Ehlers Danlos Society website.
Sorry to not have further information, but hopefully this will yield some insight as to how to approach working with this and many other questionable conditions.
What is Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome?
“The Ehlers-Danlos syndromes are a group of connective tissue disorders that can be inherited and are varied both in how they affect the body and in their genetic causes. They are generally characterized by joint hypermobility (joints that stretch further than normal), skin hyperextensibility (skin that can be stretched further than normal), and tissue fragility.” For more information, visit: https://www.ehlers-danlos.com/what-is-eds/.
